GSE Launches Visiting Faculty Scholars of Color Series
Penn GSE has initiated a Visiting Faculty Scholars of Color program to bring eminent scholars to campus for a two-day visit during which they will present on their research and meet with faculty and students.
In December, University of Arizona Professor Luis Moll (pictured at right) visited campus. Moll, a professor of language, reading, and culture, focuses his research on the connections among culture, psychology, and education, especially in relation to the education of Latino children in the United States.
$10 Million Grant to Establish Center for Cognition and Science Instruction
With Penn GSE in the lead, the University of Pennsylvania is partnering in a new center dedicated to improving middle school science education. Called the 21st Century Center for Cognition and Science Instruction, the project has received $10 million in grant support from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute for Education Sciences.
GSE Hosts International Forum to Improve Math, Science Teacher Preparation
Penn GSE hosted delegations of senior education researchers and policy makers from nine members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum on Oct. 26-27 to plan an international study on secondary-school math- and science-teacher preparation.

Helping Parents COPE
The research shows that parents who are stressed-out and socially isolated are more likely to abuse their children. But a strong social network can help at-risk parents handle their stressful lives—and reduce child maltreatment. Penn GSE researchers have designed a community-based intervention designed to help.
