    Fathers and Families Initiative

The Coalition of Community Foundations for Youth is continuing its work with the Annie E. Casey, Ford, Danforth, and Charles Stewart Mott foundations on issues relating to fathers and families. Under a series of grants that run through 1999, more than 50 community foundations will receive support to work on issues around fathers and families at levels ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

Thus far, the Coalition has awarded eight matching grants to support school, family, and community partnerships; five matching grants to support best practices and policy innovations to involve fathers in the lives of their children; and has funded 36 community foundations to do local events around Father's Day. Additionally, the Coalition awarded 10 "next steps" grants to community foundations who participated in Father's Day events. These grantees are informing policy makers, administrators, and staff who work with children and families in a variety of settings about the benefits of connecting fathers and their children.

Another round of requests for proposals (RFPs) was issued in January 1998 and grants will be awarded by March 31, 1998. We are also providing modest grants to enable community foundations and regional associations of grantmakers to convene grantmakers to discuss how a focus on fathers can strengthen existing work on behalf of children and families.

Finally, the Coalition will work with the National Center for Strategic Non-Profit Planning & Community Leadership to provide one-day workshops in five communities on changes in the new welfare reform law, child support enforcement, paternity establishment, as well as programmatic and practice innovations on responsible fatherhood.
